Project Officer's Report - 2006 / 2007
SCOT has continued strongly during this report period with its activities in relief
and rehabilitation and alleviation of poverty among the Tamil speaking people of
Sri Lanka. During this period children’s education has been identified and supported
as a priority in the North and East.
It is with regret that I report a special project SCOT funded, the building of a
pre-school nursery in Vadamarachi has been stopped half-way due to severe worsening
of the ethnic conflict in that district. I hope that the security situation in the
area would improve soon so that the project could be completed
During the period SCOT had to dig deep to help the displaced people from Vaharai
who flooded into Batticaloa. We thank the Hindu Young Men's Association of Batticaloa,
the Hindu Council of Sri Lanka and St Johns Centre for their part in the distribution
of food and other items funded by SCOT to these unfortunate people. SCOT support
to the displaced people of the North and East even reached Eelam refugee’s in Chennai
through the Organisation for Eelam Refugees’ Rehabilitation (OfERR) there.
In its efforts to help people to help themselves, SCOT has supported a cattle farm
project in Batticaloa. Again, the movement of troops to this farming area has blocked
the development and has an unfortunate effect on the local people.
The requests for help for the children who are left fatherless by the ethnic war
continue to increase and we regret that we are unable to meet all the requests at
times. SCOT acknowledges with thanks the generous support of many of our members,
well-wishers and donors. We hope this support and assistance will continue strongly
in the coming years.
The total amount of funds disbursed during the year ending 31st August 2007 is £32750
A full list of organizations supported with details of their location, function
and amounts contributed to them by SCOT is attached.
